Veterinary Technology Instructor
Beginning Date:
November 1, 2009
Reports To:
Dean, Agriculture, Business & Transportation Technology
About the Position:
The instructor will be responsible for course instruction and classroom management in an AVMA accredited program. Duties include, but are not limited to: teaching classroom and laboratory sessions; curriculum development/restructuring; assessment of student learning and skills completed; committee assignments; student academic advising; responsibility for materials, supplies and lab condition. All candidates interviewed will be required to provide a teaching demonstration.
Minimum Qualifications:
* AAS Degree in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited program; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
* Licensed/registered vet tech with ability to be licensed in Iowa.
* Knowledge of small and large animal veterinary skills.
* Ability to perform all necessary and routine tasks associated with a veterinary clinic per a typical technician’s role.
* Recent work experience, three years of which must be in direct contact in a veterinary-related environment.
* Model professional conduct and ethics.
* Requires correct hearing and vision within normal range.
* Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
* Effective organizational skills, particularly as they relate to the teaching-learning process.
* Capable of creating a classroom and lab environment which is conducive to student learning.
Job Responsibilities:
  1. Function as a team leader with other instructors to promote, develop, and deliver quality education programs that are in the best interest of the students and the college.
  2. Organize and teach classes and the labs as assigned by the academic dean, meeting the contract minimum of on-campus hours per week.
  3. Conduct class meetings for the entire period scheduled and in a punctual manner.
  4. Contribute to the development of course objectives and assessments for the program.
  5. Assist with the development and monitoring of the program budget.
  6. Interview prospective students for the Veterinary Technology Program in the absence of the Program Chair.
  7. Assist with the development and revision of program curricula.
  8. Assist with the recruitment and retention of students to the program.
  9. Develop/maintain relationships with off-campus large animal laboratory cooperators.
  10. Develop/maintain relationships with area animal shelters/humane societies for procurement of program lab animals.
  11. Develop/maintain relationships with area veterinary practices for pursuit of future student internship sites.
  12. Initiate and pursue a professional growth plan; at a minimum, this plan must meet the guide lines for yearly in-service training.
  13. Maintain competency and knowledge of current research, practice, and trends in the veterinary technology field.
  14. Advise students as assigned; refer students to other college resources as needed.
  15. Actively participate in college life and activities, including participation in campus committees.
  16. Maintain program equipment, making reports of repairs as needed to the department program chair and appropriate college departments.
  17. Maintain student enrollment, attendance, competency records, grades and other pertinent class and student records.
  18. Participate in departmental, school, and college meetings as scheduled.
  19. Maintain up-to-date syllabi, using criteria established by the Dean, in all courses as assigned.
  20. Exhibit a positive and professional demeanor and attitude, contributing to a productive and growth oriented work environment.
  21. Schedule and conduct office hours weekly.
  22. Serve as an advisor to student activity organizations as assigned.
  23. Understand and adhere to the organization structure of the College and the academic division.
  24. Maintain confidentiality regarding students and colleagues.
  25. Demonstrate punctuality on all requests from the Dean. This may include but is not limited to:
    • Development of class schedules
    • Budget development
    • Evaluation of courses and programs
    • Reports
    • Committee assignments
    • Equipment needs and evaluations
  26. Undertake and proficiently complete additional duties as assigned.
 
Desirable Qualifications:
* Practice/clinic experience.
* An understanding of the community college philosophy and the community college student.
* Commitment to cultural diversity among students, faculty, and in the curriculum.
* Computer experience in common software and Internet.
* Experience with alternative learning delivery methods and systems.
* Experience in delivering computer-enhanced laboratory simulations.
* Successful teaching experience.
Employment Conditions:
This is a full-time, bargaining unit faculty position.   Teaching assignment is located at the Council Bluffs campus. Present schedule is Monday-Friday daytime hours; however, this does not preclude the possibility for variable hours during days, evenings, and/or weekends in the future.
