Position Summary: The Lead Sterile Processing Tech, applies and enforces regulations, standards, and hospital policy and procedures pertaining to all areas of sterile processing. Maintains knowledge of operation of all equipment in sterile processing and reports malfunctions to appropriate personnel immediately. Responsible for instrument decontamination, sterile processing, instrument care, safe handling procedures and documentation related to those activities.

Position Requirements

Education: High School Education or GED required.

Licensure: N/A

Certification: Sterile Processing Certification, Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required.

Experience:

  • 2+ years of sterile processing experience required.
  • 1+ years of leadership skills/experience required.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrate leadership on the job by continuously updating knowledge in areas or accountability and profession to maintain competence.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform all the essential job functions within the Sterile Processing department.

Essential Job Functions

  • Meet or exceed patient care requirements by coordinating and directing the operations of the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Lead safe instrumentation practices by following established guidelines to assure delivery of instrumentation is consistent with private, state and federal regulations.
  • Monitor performance of the department staff by data collection, coaching, education and role modeling at the direction of management to ensure ongoing performance improvement.
  • Problem-solves and makes decisions within areas of accountability by using a well-defined approach.
  • Contribute to department performance improvement activities by providing support and resources to improve patient outcomes.
  • Comply with safety policies and procedures, regulatory requirements such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards and the Joint Commission and participate in hospital wide safety activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical requirements: This position is classified as Light Work in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (66% of the time) to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work.
